The following information may be helpful if you experience trouble with your software installation.

Vista users should first visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931362/

A VISTA update is in the works.  (I hope we get it finished before Vista destroys Microsoft.)  In the mean time, Microsoft's suggests you "Run the program as an administrator."   This setting seems to be working for everyone so far.

Windows 95 through XP Pro:

The number one issue with our customers is that some do not have Internet access on the PC they want to use their software on.   This is because the software must be able to confirm payment by connecting to our servers.  Until then, it will only run in DEMO mode.   Therefore, if the PC this software is being installed on does not have Internet access, then you will have to e-mail us for your unlock codes before the program will "authorize".  To do this, follow these 10 steps:

Step #1.          Install the software on the PC you are certain you wish to use the software on.   It will only un-lock once.  To do this, use a CD you have made by downloading the setup.exe file onto this CD-ROM.   Do not download and open the “setup” file until you have copied it to a CD-ROM.  Place the CD-ROM you've either made or purchased, into the PC without the Internet access and run the setup.exe file.

Step #2.          Install the software as above and open it in DEMO mode and run it.

Step #3.          Click on the license popup window to close it.

Step #4.          Select “Unlock by Phone”

Step #5.          Write down the two numbers shown as  “User Code 1” and  “User Code 2”.      After you are sure they are correct, go to Step #6.

Step #6.          Choose “Close and Unlock Later”.  If you make a mistake and click on “Unlock”, or simply “close” the program/window, then you must repeat steps #3 through #6, or the authorization codes we send you will not work.

Step #7.          E-mail these two numbers to sales@firealarm.org. Also send us the “Customer ID” number and “License ID” sent to you by automated e-mail after you purchased the software or as shown on the back of the CD jewel case.    Be sure to include your name and phone number, in case there is a problem.

Step #8.           We will e-mail you  “Reg Key” numbers.  Open the program using the desktop icon.  Go to “Unlock by Phone” and enter the “Reg Key” numbers and click on the “Unlock” button.  You will then get a screen saying you are “AUTHORIZED”.  Click on it to close it to get the “login” screen.

Step #9.          For the “small “login” screen, the Levels I-II software uses the word Password and the Level III software uses the word NICET.  They are case-sensitive.

Step #10.        Go to the “options” menu at the top of the screen and select “Edit user information…” Enter your personal information into the blanks.  You may also change your login password here.

Although rare (< 3%), some have had a little trouble installing their software, but don’t despair because in the end, everyone was successful.

bulletUpgrades (special priced versions) must be installed on the same PC the original version was installed on.   If a working version is not on that PC, the new upgrade or specially priced version WILL NOT WORK, nor is it supposed to.

bulletIf the program gives you “error” messages after it is installed or doesn’t fully open (holes in the program windows through which you can see your desk-top, etc.) then UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM!   Go to Microsoft’s website (http://www.microsoft.com) and select update from the menu on the left side of their home page.  The Microsoft update site will inspect your operating system and determine the updates needed to run ‘modern’ programs. You may also try this direct link:  http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp              This software will run on Windows 95 through Windows XP, but some earlier versions must have their updates!

bulletA few have also needed to update their web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, etc.) to the latest version.  This, too, is free.

bulletIf you get “unable to connect to server” messages, it is because the PC is not connected to the Internet.  Either use the above instructions to “Unlock by Phone” or install it on a PC that has an internet connection.  We stated in all advertising that this software was meant for home study on a single PC, not a networked computer.   However, if you wish to try to install it on your desktop at work, and you are on a network, you may try to use the Proxy button and enter your proxy server address. We do not support this type of installation, so good luck and don’t call us concerning this issue!

bulletIf you get a message about “allotted number of uses” close the program and re-open it, or try re-installing it.  "Authorized" versions do not have a limit to the number of uses.
